CHICAGO – DePaul’s ability to get offense from multiple positions paid off Thursday, with the 19th-ranked Blue Demons easing past Indiana to earn a spot in Sunday’s Preseason WNIT championship game at No. 4 Baylor. That game will tip off at 3 p.m. ET and be televised by CBS Sports Network. Baylor defeated No. 17 South Florida on Thursday, 66-63.
DePaul (3-0) managed to grab a slight lead at halftime, even with Indiana (2-1) shooting 65 percent from the field. When the Hoosiers came back to earth, the Blue Demons were waiting with their uptempo game plan, holding Indiana to just 30 points in the final two quarters.
Megan Podkowa had 16 points for the Blue Demons, and she also contributed four rebounds, four assists and four steals. Ashton Millender drained four 3-pointers on the way to 15 points, and Brooke Schulte added 13 points. DePaul only shot four free throws, but did hit 11 3-pointers.
For Indiana, sophomore Amanda Cahill continued her effective work offensively at the start of the season with 15 points, to go with eight rebounds before fouling out. Tyra Buss added 10 points, six rebounds and five assists, and Karlee McBride scored 10 points. The Hoosiers had 23 turnovers and were an uncharacteristic 7-of-17 from the free-throw line.
