WACO, TX – With its trademark defense leading the way, No. 4 Baylor kept No. 19 DePaul at arm’s length throughout Sunday’s contest, shooting an impressive 63 percent from the field as well to post an 86-72 victory against the Blue Demons and win the 2015 Preseason WNIT championship.
The Lady Bears (4-0), who also won the title in 2011, jumped out to an 8-0 lead and held up despite some trouble with turnovers that allowed DePaul (3-1) to cut the lead to 24-22 after the first quarter. Baylor used a balanced scoring attack to rebuild the advantage, and DePaul never really found its shooting touch, going 5-for-28 (18 percent) from the 3-point line.
Alexis Jones scored 21 points for the Lady Bears; Khadijiah Cave came off the bench and racked up 16 points, with Nina Davis scoring 20 points to go with 10 rebounds. Baylor had a 37-27 edge in rebounds.
DePaul was paced by Megan Podkowa, who closed with 19 points and seven rebounds. Brooke Schulte and Chanise Jenkins each had 13 points for the Blue Demons, who did force Baylor in 21 turnovers.
Davis was named the Most Valuable Player on the all-Preseason WNIT team. Joining her on the squad was Amanda Cahill of Indiana, Courtney Williams of South Florida, Chanise Jenkins and Megan Podkowa of DePaul, and Baylor's Niya Johnson.
