BONAVENTURE, NY – Three separate scoring runs helped St. Bonaventure come back against Siena and then pull away to a comfortable victory in the opening round of the 2015 Preseason WNIT.
The Bonnies (1-0) will play DePaul or Southern Illinois in Round 2 next week, while the Saints (0-1) will play in the consolation round next week at a site to be determined.
Trailing 19-15 in the second quarter, St. Bonaventure went on an 11-0 run to take the lead, then kicked off the third quarter with a 7-0 run to build some breathing room. Siena responded by cutting a 14-point deficit down to seven points at the end of the third quarter, but the Bonnies scored the first seven points of the final quarter to secure their win.
Sophomore forward Miranda Drummond paced St. Bonaventure with 15 points and four assists. Katie Healy, a two-time all-Atlantic 10 selection, scored 12 of her 14 points in the first half to help the team stay in range while adding 13 rebounds overall. Nyla Rueter added 11 points. The Bonnies enjoyed a 42-28 rebounding advantage in the contest.
For the Saints, Kollyns Scarbrough, a sophomore guard, contributed 10 points and four rebounds. Siena shot just 27 percent from the field and had nothing but trouble from long range, going just 1-of-16 from the 3-point line.
