Sacramento, CA – The Sacramento State Hornets (18-15) move past Big Sky-foe Eastern Washington 84-49 and advance to Round Three of the WNIT.
Four Hornets players scored in double figures including a game-high 17 points from Takara Burse. Maranne Johnson and Andrea Chenier both chipped in 12 apiece. Margaret Huntington finished with 11 points and pulled down a game-high 11 rebounds.
Eastern Washington’s Lexie Nelson finished with a team-high 12 points and teammate Delaney Hodgins added 11.
The Hornets used a 21-6 run midway through the first half to open up a 15-point lead and never looked back leading by as many as 38 points. The Hornets led 38-28 at halftime and outscored the Eagles 46-21 in the second half.
The two teams split in Big Sky conference play this season before tonight’s matchup. The Hornets are playing in their first postseason tournament in program history and improve to 18-15 on the season. Eastern Washington ends the year with a 21-12 record; 21 wins ties the program’s high-water mark for wins. EWU also earned its first postseason victory in program history with its Round One win over Washington State.
Sacramento State will host Saint Mary’s in Round Three of the WNIT on Thursday, March 26 at 10 p.m. ET / 7 p.m. PT.
SAINT MARY’S 83, FRESNO STATE 64
Moraga, CA – Coming off a thrilling overtime win over Hawaii in Round One of the WNIT, Saint Mary’s came out strong from the get-go as the Gaels cruise to an 83-64 victory over Fresno State.
Lauren Nicholson led Saint Mary’s with 21 points on 6-of-8 shooting from the field. Carly Turner chipped in 15 points coming off the bench for the Gaels.
Fresno State’s Raven Fox led all scorers with 22 points hitting 9-of-11 from the field and Moriah Faulk added 13 points for the Bulldogs.
Saint Mary’s opened the game with a 6-0 run and never trailed. Fresno tied the game at 17-17 with less than eight minutes to play in the first half before the Gaels went on a 17-0 run. Fresno was held scoreless for nearly 10 minutes before a Stephanie Rovetti steal and layup at the 2:57 mark.
The two teams met earlier in the season with the Bulldogs winning 60-56 in Fresno.
Saint Mary’s will play at Sacramento State in WNIT Round Three action on Thursday, March 26 at 10 p.m. ET / 7 p.m. PT.
MICHIGAN 74, TOLEDO 58
Toledo, OH – The University of Michigan women’s basketball team will advance to Round Three of the WNIT following a 74-58 victory over the Toledo Rockets. Michigan improves to 18-14 on the season and Toledo falls to 19-14.
Michigan guards Siera Thompson and Katelynn Flaherty both finished with monster games coming off the bench for the Wolverines. Flaherty hit 11-of-15 shots from the field to drop a game-high 25 points and Thompson added 20 points hitting all four three-point attempts. The Michigan bench outscored the Toledo bench 46-4.
Three Toledo players finished in double figures with Inma Zanoguera leading the way with 14 points and dishing out six assists. Ana Capotosto added 12 points and Brenae Harris finished with 11.
Michigan’s Nicole Elmblad owned the boards all night pulling down a game-high 14 rebounds and chipping in eight points. The Wolverines shot a smoking 66 percent from behind the arc and held the Rockets to 35 percent.
The game went back and forth early in the first half with both Toledo and Michigan holding leads. However, the Wolverines used a 16-0 run to end the half to take a 37-23 lead going into halftime. Michigan held Toledo scoreless in the final 6:06 of the first half. Both teams played even in the second half with a slight 37-35 advantage for Michigan.
The Wolverines will host the Missouri Tigers in Round Three of the WNIT on Thursday, March 26 at 7 p.m. ET.
