Smith, who became Illinois’ leading scorer in history her last game out, tied the Illinois single-season double-double record of 20 with her performance Monday. She has 2,137 points for her career. Teammate Lacey Simpson had four steals against Marquette to move into sole possession of second place on the all-time Big Ten career steals list.
Marquette (17-16) was led by Sarina Simmons, who had 12 points and 10 rebounds in the Golden Eagles’ final game of the season.
In other games Monday, Northwestern (18-14) defeated St. Bonaventure (23-10) in a back-and-forth matchup. The Wildcats won 66-62 and will play at fellow Big Ten Conference foe Michigan at 7 p.m. ET Thursday in Round 3.
Syracuse (24-10) will host VCU in a Round 3 game Friday, thanks to a 69-55 victory over Richmond (20-13).
Providence also advanced to the third round, as the Friars (18-14) outlasted Old Dominion 76-61. The Lady Monarchs, who won the regular-season title in the Colonial, ended their season with a 19-14 record.
