Hattiesburg, Miss. – Southern Miss charged hard in the second half and outlasted visiting Eastern Michigan for a 76-65 victory in the third round of the Postseason WNIT.
Eastern Michigan (24-12), which tied its best season in school history for number of wins, led until midway through the second half. The teams exchanged leads, and then Southern Miss took the lead for good on an Ashley Folsom bucket with 7:21 left in the game that put the Lady Eagles up 59-57.
Tamara Jones led the way with 23 points, 10 rebounds and 4 assists, and teammate Alex Coyne chipped in 11 points, 4 rebounds, and 6 assists.
Southern Miss (24-10) will await the winner of Thursday’s Missouri at Michigan game for a quarterfinal matchup that will take place March 28-30 at a site to be determined.
Eastern Michigan won its previous two WNIT games on the road at Drake and Tulsa, and had won seven straight road games dating back to conference play. The Eagles were led by Janay Morton (14 points, 4 rebounds, 4 assists) and Cha Sweeney (13 points, 6 rebounds, 6 assists).
