The expansion increases the field by 16 teams.
“We believe that women’s college basketball has risen to a very high level and that the depth of quality teams has increased significantly. This has been obvious in the high level of parity that has made the tournament field selection more and more challenging each year,” WNIT executive director Brent Amick said. “We are excited that this expansion will allow for the inclusion of more quality teams deserving of postseason play.”
The Postseason WNIT will celebrate its 13th year with the 2010 event. The expansion to 64 teams was planned to accommodate a stronger field of teams. The tournament will continue to feature an automatic berth for each of the nation’s 31 established conferences, in addition to now offering at-large berths to 33 teams.
The 2010 Postseason WNIT will feature 32 first-round games, followed by 16 second-round games, eight third-round games, four quarterfinal games, two semifinal games, and the championship. All games in the single-elimination format are played at a host facility of participating schools.
The WNIT field will be announced the evening of the NCAA Tournament selections, which is Monday, March 15. Games may begin Wednesday, March 17. The championship game will be played on Saturday, April 3, 2010 with national television coverage of the game.
In last year’s Postseason WNIT, South Florida edged host Kansas 75-71 in front of a record crowd of 16,113 fans. It was the largest crowd in Big 12 Conference and Kansas history to watch a women’s college game.
