Chapel Hill, N.C. - North Carolina (2-0) edged past Duquesne (1-1) 62-58 to advance to the semifinals of the Preseason WNIT.
Tierra Ruffin-Pratt led all scorers with 24 points hitting 8-of-16 shots from the field and teammates Krista Gross and Waltiea Rolle both finished with 11 for the Tar Heels.
Duquesne junior forward Orsi Szecsi led the Dukes with 17 points despite fouling out in the final three minutes of the game while April Robinson added ten points and eight rebounds.
Duquesne led by nine points at halftime (35-26), but North Carolina outscored the Dukes 36-23 in the second half to secure the win.
North Carolina moved to 2-0 all-time against Duquesne and is now 410-93 in the Carmichael Arena. This was the first meeting between the two schools at Chapel Hill.
The Tar Heels will host Georgetown on Wed., Nov. 14 at 7 p.m. ET. The Hoyas defeated Delaware earlier in the day 62-56.
Iowa 74, Illinois State 64
Iowa City, Iowa - In the 2000th game in Iowa women’s basketball history, the Hawkeyes (2-0) knocked off Illinois State (1-1) 74-64 and advance to the semifinal round of the Preseason WNIT.
Morgan Johnson finished with 24 points and five blocks for Iowa and teammate Theairra Taylor added 10.
Redbird senior guard Jamie Russell led all scorers and finished with a career-best 30 points, 12 rebounds, and eight steals. Fellow teammate and sophomore forward Janae Smith finished with 17 for Illinois State.
Iowa has now won the last six meetings versus Illinois State and leads the all-time series 6-1. The Hawkeyes will host Middle Tennessee State in the semifinals on Wed., Nov. 14 with an 8 p.m. ET tip.
Middle Tennessee State 82, Memphis 68
Murfreesboro, Tenn. - Middle Tennessee State moves on to the semifinal round of the Preseason WNIT after defeating Memphis 82-68.
The Blue Raiders had four players in double figures including Icelyn Elie who led all scorers with 30 points on 13-of-19 shooting. Teammates Ebony Rowe added 19 points, Kortni Jones (14), and Shanice Cason (10).
Memphis sophomore guard Bilqis Abdul-Qaadir finished with a team-high 16 points for the Tigers and true freshman Ariel Hearn chipped in 13.
MTSU will travel to Iowa to take on the Hawkeyes in round three on Wed., Nov. 14 at 8 p.m. ET.
Georgetown 62, Delaware 56
Newark, Del. - Sugar Rodgers scored 35 points to help lead Georgetown (2-0) to a 62-56 win over Delaware (1-1) advancing to the semifinal round of the Preseason WNIT.
Rodgers shot 11-of-21 from the field and had five steals in the win. Teammate Jasmine Jackson chipped in 11 points coming off the bench for the Hoyas.
Delaware, without All-American Elena Delle Donne for the second straight game, had three players in double figures. Senior guard Laura Carra led the Blue Hens with 19 points and nine rebounds, while Trumae Lucas added 14 and Danielle Parker 11.
Delaware is now 3-2 all-time against the Hoyas and 13-16 against Big East opponents. Georgetown will play the winner of Duquesne at North Carolina in the semifinals, site and date yet to be determined.
