LINCOLN, Neb. – Nebraska took a halftime lead and kept on coming Saturday to slip past UTRGV in Round 1 of the Preseason WNIT. The Cornhuskers will host Missouri in Round 2, with tipoff set for Monday, Nov. 14 at 7 p.m. CT.
Jessica Shepard, last year’s Big Ten freshman of the year, hit a 3-pointer in the waning seconds of the second quarter to give Nebraska a 33-24 lead. She closed with 17 points and 15 rebounds as Nebraska (1-0) shot 40 percent from the field and claimed a 19-8 edge in assists. Senior center Allie Havers added 10 points and seven rebounds.
The Vaqueros (0-1) had a big effort from Shawnte’ Goff, last year’s WAC player of the year, as she poured in 19 points and added five rebounds. Laura Van Tilburg had 11 points and five rebounds. Otherwise, the UTRGV offense struggled, as the team shot 32 percent from the field, 4-for-22 from the 3-point line.
