Wednesday, April 02, 2008 – Michigan State and Marquette punched tickets Wednesday night to the championship of the Postseason Women’s National Invitation Tournament.
Michigan State edged NC State 58-57 at Breslin Center in East Lansing, Mich. Allyssa DeHaan’s put-back with 11 seconds left gave the Spartans (23-13) the final edge after numerous ties and lead changes in the game. DeHaan finished with 15 points and six rebounds, while teammate Mia Johnson led all scorers with 17 points. For NC State (21-13), Khadijah Whittington had a double-double with 13 points and 12 rebounds.
Michigan State will host Marquette in the WNIT championship beginning at 4 p.m. ET Saturday, April 5. The title game will be televised live on CBS College Sports Network (formerly CSTV).
Marquette won its second straight road game in the WNIT with an 86-72 victory over Colorado. The Golden Eagles (20-14) are playing in the WNIT title game for the second time in three years.
Marquette got up early on Colorado (19-15), and then unlike the Buffaloes’ previous two opponents, kept Colorado from closing the gap. Krystal Ellis scored 27 points for Marquette and has 101 points in four WNIT games. Jackie McFarland led Colorado with 17 points and nine rebounds. |
