| |
March 6, 2012 – The championship game and a semifinal game of the Women’s National Invitation Tournament will be carried live by CBS Sports Network, the WNIT announced today.
For the second straight year, CBSSN and the WNIT are partnering to televise both games in the Postseason WNIT. The semifinal game will start at 8 p.m. ET Wednesday, March 28. The championship game will be played on Saturday, March 31, beginning at 3 p.m. ET.
“We are fortunate to have the national level of exposure that CBS Sports Network is committed to for these games,” WNIT director Renee Carlson said. “It’s great to be able to showcase the energy and excitement of the semifinals and championship to a national audience.”
The broadcast team features Thad Anderson on play-by-play duties, and Ceal Barry will provide color commentary.
In the tournament’s 14 prior years, the title game has averaged more than 10,000 fans in attendance each year. Past champions include Auburn, California, Kansas State, Ohio State, Penn State, Marquette, South Florida, Wisconsin, and Wyoming. Last year’s champion, Toledo, defeated Southern Cal in front of a sold-out arena.
The Postseason WNIT features a 64-team field. The tournament offers automatic berths to 31 teams – one per conference – and then selects 33 at-large teams. The 2012 WNIT begins March 14 and culminates March 31. All games, including the final, are hosted by participating schools.
