Saturday, April 5, 2008 – Krystal Ellis had 15 points and 11 assists to lead Marquette to an 81-66 victory and the crown in the championship game of the 2008 Postseason Women’s National Invitation Tournament.
Marquette took control a few minutes into the first half. With Michigan State leading 7-6, Marquette went on a 26-4 run over an eight-minute span that turned out to be the difference in the game.
Michigan State (23-14) got within nine points, but Marquette answered each run with a strong shooting night. The Golden Eagles (21-14) shot 54.5 percent in the first half.
It was the first time a WNIT team had won three games on the road in the march to the title. Saturday's game was played in front of 7,818 fans at the Breslin Center.
Ellis was named MVP of the tournament. She scored 116 points in five games. Joining her on the all-tournament squad was teammate Angel Robinson; Michigan State’s Allyssa DeHaan and Kalisha Keane; Jackie McFarland of Colorado; and Khadijah Whittington of NC State.
