North Carolina captures Preseason title
with 1-point victory over Oklahoma
 
November 23, 2008 – North Carolina’s women’s basketball team captured its first Preseason WNIT title Sunday with an 80-79 victory over host Oklahoma.

The Tar Heels, ranked No. 4 in the nation in the Associated Press poll, went on a 6-2 run late in the championship game, then held on during a furious Oklahoma rally to earn the WNIT title.

The game featured six ties and seven lead changes.

North Carolina’s Jessica Breland (31 points) led all scorers and was named the tournament MVP following her 14-of-18 shooting night. She was joined on the all-tournament team by North Carolina’s Rashanda McCants (10 points, five rebounds); Oklahoma’s Courtney Paris, and Ashley Paris; Arizona State’s Sybil Dosty; and Xavier’s Ta’Shia Phillips.

The Sooners, ranked No. 2 in the country, were led by Ashley Paris (20 points, 11 rebounds), Danielle Robinson (20 points), and Courtney Paris (15 points, 12 rebounds).
