Drexel Dragons Win 2013 WNIT Championship

The Drexel Dragons claimed the 2013 WNIT Championship defeating the Utah Utes 46-43 at the John A. Daskalakis Athletic Center in Philadelphia, Pa.

Trailing 43-42 with less than a minute remaining, Drexel senior guard Hollie Mershon hit a layup for the go-ahead bucket with 22 seconds on the clock.

Mershon then capitalized on two free throws in the final seconds to seal the win for the Dragons.

Drexel senior forward Taylor Wootton scored a game-high 16 points surpassing the 1,000-point mark for her career. Mershon finished with 14 points, eight rebounds, and three assists

Iwalini Rodrigues led the Utes with 12 points; Taryn Wicijowski and Michelle Plouffe each had nine.

Plouffe recorded 14 rebounds giving her 83 for the tournament and setting a new WNIT record.

This was the first-ever meeting between the two schools and the first time a Colonial Athletic Association team has won the Postseason WNIT.
