Maryland upends LSU in championship game
Sunday, Nov. 18, 2007 - Maryland, ranked third in the nation, overcame No. 4 LSU on Sunday afternoon in a battle for the 2007 Preseason WNIT championship crown.
Maryland downed LSU 75-62 at Comcast Center in College Park, Maryland. After a back-and-forth first half, LSU took a 40-38 lead early in the second half before Maryland went on a 16-1 run to take control of the game. Maryland's Kristi Toliver scored 23 points and added seven assists as she earned MVP honors for the WNIT All-Tournament Team. Teammate Jade Perry also earned a spot on the elite team, as did LSU's Sylvia Fowles and Quianna Chaney; Michigan State's Allyssa DeHaan; and Notre Dame's Charel Allen. The 2007 Preseason WNIT field included nine teams that played in the postseason in 2006-07, highlighted by LSU’s Final Four finish. Delaware, Delaware State, LSU, Maryland, Michigan State, Notre Dame and TCU played in the NCAA Tournament, and East Tennessee State and Western Kentucky advanced to the Postseason WNIT. They were joined by Evansville, IUPUI, Marshall, Miami (Ohio), Princeton, Radford, and Samford in the fall’s Preseason WNIT.
