Oct. 30, 2011 – Baylor and Notre Dame are playing in this fall’s Preseason Women’s National Invitation Tournament, and could meet each other in the championship game Nov. 20 that would feature the top teams in the country.
Baylor was voted as the Preseason No. 1 team in the nation in both the Associated Press poll and the ESPN/USA Today Coaches poll, followed by Notre Dame at No. 2 in both polls and UCLA at No. 22 in the Associated Press poll. It’s the first time in history that Baylor has started the season ranked No. 1.
The championship game will be televised live by CBS Sports Network beginning at 2 p.m. ET. If Baylor and Notre Dame each win their first three games in the Preseason WNIT, they will play each other in the championship in Waco, Texas. Baylor has the potential to play UCLA in the semifinals before meeting Notre Dame.
Last year, Notre Dame finished second in the nation after losing the NCAA Tournament championship game to Texas A&M. The Irish welcome back four starters from that team. Baylor also returns four starters from its 34-3 squad that advanced to the Elite Eight. UCLA, which finished last season ranked eighth in the country, features a new coach and two returning starters from its record-setting 28-5 team.
