November 13, 2011 – Baylor’s women’s basketball team scored its second straight lopsided victory Sunday in the Preseason Women’s National Invitation Tournament, getting a 91-31 victory over Chattanooga.
The No. 1 team in the nation according to the polls, Baylor has outscored its opponents 173-59. The win over Chattanooga sends the Bears into the Preseason WNIT semifinals, where they will host UCLA at 8 p.m. ET Thursday.
Brittney Griner, the ESPN Preseason Player of the Year, led the way for Baylor with 19 points and 8 rebounds in 22 minutes of action. Teammates Odyssey Sims (18 points, 4 assists), Brooklyn Pope (16 points, 10 rebounds), and Destiny Williams (14 points, 9 rebounds) were top contributors as well.
Chattanooga had Kylie Lambert and Taylor Hall each score 10 points. The Lady Mocs will play their third and final game in the Preseason WNIT in Consolation Round 3 on Friday against an opponent to be named. Details will be announced Monday.
In another Round 2 game Sunday, Notre Dame left no doubt about their intentions for this season.
The Fighting Irish, ranked No. 2 in the country, led a huge team charge and finished with a 99-34 victory over visiting Indiana State. Notre Dame ensured a berth in the semifinals, and will host Hartford at 7 p.m. ET Thursday in South Bend, Ind.
Notre Dame had six players in double figures Sunday, including senior guard Natalie Novosel (10 points, 6 assists), who scored her 1,000th career point during the game for the 8,000-plus fans in attendance. She was joined by Kayla McBride (16 points), Skylar Diggins (14 points, 7 assists, 6 steals), Markisha Wright (14 points, 11 rebounds), Devereaux Peters (14 points, 6 steals), and Fraderica Miller (10 points, 6 rebounds) in double-digit scoring.
Indiana State, which had won its first-round WNIT game, never could get going against Notre Dame. Anna Munn led the Sycamores with 13 points. Indiana State’s final Preseason WNIT game will be in Consolation Round 3 against an opponent to be named. That game will take place Friday and details will be announced tomorrow.
Hartford will play at Notre Dame in Thursday’s 7 p.m. ET semifinal after earning a 54-45 victory over Long Island. The Hawks’ offense got going in the second half, with junior Ruthanne Doherty pouring in 18 points and 12 rebounds.
Long Island’s Ashley Palmer (18 points, 10 rebounds) had a double-double of her own, and will lead the Blackbirds into the Consolation Round 3 game Friday, details of which will be announced tomorrow.
In the final game Sunday, No. 22 ranked UCLA downed Tennessee Tech 74-52. UCLA will play in the semifinals Thursday against Baylor. Tennessee Tech will play in Consolation Round 3 on Friday, with details to be announced Monday.
UCLA had stellar performances from Rebekah Gardner, who scored 21 points and added 10 rebounds, and from Atonye Nyingifa, who scored 16 points and grabbed 14 rebounds. For Tennessee Tech, Tacarra Hayes scored 13 points.
The eight teams that lost in Round 1 last Friday will play two more WNIT games in Consolation Rounds 1&2. Here are the details of those games:
Akron will host Detroit, Drexel, and Howard on Friday and Saturday. Detroit and Drexel will meet in the first round beginning at 5 p.m. ET Friday, and Akron and Howard will play in the 7:30 p.m. ET game later that evening. On Saturday, the winners of Friday’s games will play each other, and the losers will play each other. Saturday’s game times are 5 and 7:30 p.m. ET, with Akron playing in the 7:30 p.m. game no matter if it wins or loses on Friday.
The other host site is McNeese State in Lake Charles, La. McNeese will host ETSU, UAB, and Manhattan. In the first game Friday at 6:30 p.m. ET, UAB and ETSU will match up. The second game features McNeese and Manhattan at 8:30 p.m. ET. On Saturday, the winners of Friday’s games will play each other, and the losers will play each other. Saturday’s game times are 1 p.m. and 3 p.m. ET, with McNeese playing in the 1 p.m. game no matter if it wins or loses on Friday.
