Baylor 97, Southern Miss 42
WACO, TX — Fifth-ranked Baylor woke up promptly after Southern Miss took a first-quarter lead Monday, clamping down on the Golden Eagles with a balanced attack to advance to the Preseason WNIT semifinals.
The Lady Bears (2-0), which won by 42 points in their opening-round victory versus UT Arlington, will host South Florida on Thursday, Nov. 19 (tipoff at 8 p.m. ET), with the winner advancing to the championship game on Sunday, Nov. 22. That game will be televised by CBS Sports Network at 3 p.m. ET. Southern Miss (1-1) will play later this week in the consolation round against Indiana or Chattanooga - that game will be played Tuesday at Indiana.
Baylor trailed 15-14 after 10 minutes, but its trademark disruptive defense had the Golden Eagles in scramble mode the rest of the way. The Lady Bears had 10 players break into the scoring column and forced 31 turnovers.
Alexis Prince scored 16 points and added five rebounds for Baylor. Niya Johnson had 15 points and five rebounds; Kristy Wallace added 11 points and six assists. The Lady Bears shot better than 53 percent from the field and blocked 12 shots.
Southern Miss was led by Jerontay Clemons, who scored 18 points after not playing in the team’s first-round victory against Alabama State. Caitlin Jenkins came through with six points and eight rebounds.
