Saturday, March 27, 2010 – California became the first team in the Postseason Women’s National Invitation Tournament to punch its ticket to the Final Four, when the Bears defeated BYU 76-50.
The teams were tied 28-all late in the first half before Cal scored five quick points to take a 33-28 lead heading into the locker rooms. BYU closed within 41-37 on a layup by Alexis Kaufusi with 14:05 to go in the second half, but could get no closer the rest of the way. Kaufusi finished with 14 points to lead the Cougars (23-10), who won three games, including two on the road, in their 12th postseason appearance in program history.
Cal (22-13), which outrebounded BYU 45-23, got a huge night from DeNesha Stallworth, who had 26 points and 11 rebounds. The Bears have won 10 of their last 13 games.
Cal awaits the winner of Sunday’s Illinois at Illinois State game to learn its semifinal opponent. Details of the semifinal game will be announced Sunday.
