NIAGARA 67, MORGAN STATE 57
Nacogdoches, TX – Jai Moore scored a career-high 21 points and added eight rebounds and four assists as Niagara got its first win of the season, easing past Morgan State in the consolation round of the Preseason WNIT.
The Purple Eagles (1-4) hit 15 free throws and had a 39-26 advantage in rebounds. Emerald Ekpiteta, a sophomore from London, added 12 points and 11 rebounds while Maggie McIntyre scored 10 points.
Adre’onia Coleman scored 20 points to go with 12 rebounds for Morgan State (1-4).
STEPHEN F. AUSTIN 67, YALE 57
Nacogdoches, TX – Stephen F. Austin ended its Preseason WNIT play on a winning note Saturday evening. The Lady Jacks (2-1) outscored Yale 37-20 in the second half to grab the victory, 67-57.
The Bulldogs (2-2) led by seven, 37-30, at the halfway mark but a 21-5 run from Stephen F. Austin allowed the Lady Jacks to surge ahead by the end of the third quarter. Roxy Barahman nailed several jumpers down the stretch, pulling Yale within four with a little over a minute to play. It was Stephen F. Austin’s ability to knock down clutch free throws, hitting 6-8 from the charity stripe in the closing minute that sealed the win.
Senior Chanell Hayes led the Lady Jacks with 23 points, pouring in five three-pointers. Imani Johnson (12 points) and Riley Harvey (11 points) also gave Stephen F. Austin a boost.
Yale’s Roxy Barahman finished with a game-high 26 points, playing 39 of the game’s 40 minutes.
DELAWARE 71, NICHOLLS STATE 56
San Marcos, TX – After entering halftime in a 31-31 tie, Delaware outscored Nicholls State by a 40-25 margin in the second half to win this consolation round matchup in the Preseason WNIT.
The Blue Hens (1-2) had a commanding 50-26 advantage in rebounds; Abby Gonzlaes had 20 points, hitting all four of Delaware’s made 3-pointers, and freshman Jasmine Dickey came through with 15 points and 16 rebounds. Samone Defreese added 12 points and Justina Mascaro scored 10 points.
Delaware forced 22 turnovers, including seven in the fourth quarter. The Blue Hens opened up their first double-digit lead with 7:58 to go on a jumper from Rebecca Lawrence, and that was followed up by a 3-pointer from Gonzales at 7:17.
For Nicholls State (0-4), Cassidy Barrios scored 23 points and added eight rebounds. Adrian Mann scored 14 points.
MONTANA STATE 67, TEXAS STATE 59
San Marcos, TX – Montana State gave up a lead after being outscored 22-8 in the third quarter, but an explosive fourth quarter that featured a 14-0 run sent them past Texas State in the consolation round of the Preseason WNIT.
Montana State (3-1) was paced by Claire Lundberg, who was 8-for-8 from the field (including four 3-pointers) to go with 6-for-6 from the free throw line for a total of 26 points. She also had six rebounds. Martha Kurderer added 21 points.
A 3-pointer from Toshua Leavitt pulled Texas State (1-2) into a 45-43 lead with 2:22 remaining in the third quarter. Montana State responded with an extended scoring run, pulling ahead 59-49 in two free throws from Gabby Mocchi with 4:02 to go in the game.
Montana State (which struggled to protect the ball at times and had 22 turnovers) hit enough free throws down the stretch to protect its lead. Blaire Braxton chipped in with nine rebounds.
Leavitt had 19 points for Texas State, and Jayla Johnson scored 10 points.
