March 18, 2011 – Florida Gulf Coast and Florida set up an all-Florida matchup with victories Friday night in the first round of the Postseason WNIT.
Florida Gulf Coast defeated Drexel 73-67 to improve its home winning streak to 42 games, third longest in the nation behind UConn and Stanford. FGCU (28-3), the Atlantic-Sun Conference regular-season champion, will host Florida in Round 2 at 7:05 p.m. EST Monday, March 21.
Drexel (19-13), making its third straight postseason appearance in program history, led 37-34 at halftime. The Dragons’ 19 wins tie for second best in the team’s history under eight-year coach Denise Dillon.
In Friday’s other game, Florida made a second-half surge to get by UMBC 59-47. Florida (19-14) got 18 points from leading scorer Jordan Jones as she led the Gators in the opening round of their fourth consecutive postseason appearance.
UMBC (20-12) capped one of its finest seasons in program history, finishing one win shy of the 1985-86 team. The Retrievers won the America East Conference regular-season title for the first time in school history.
