Sunday, March 21, 2010 – Illinois State took the lead early and never relinquished it through a furious finish as the Redbirds held off Purdue 59-57 in Round 2 action of the Postseason Women’s National Invitation Tournament.
Illinois State (24-7) was paced by Nicolle Lewis, who had 21 points and nine rebounds to help her team advance to host Kansas at 8:05 p.m. ET Thursday, March 25.
Purdue (15-17) was led by Brittany Rayburn, who scored 16 points and pulled down six rebounds for the Boilermakers.
Maryland punched its ticket to Round 3 in the postseason with an 87-52 victory over East Carolina (23-11). Maryland (21-12) will next host the winner of Monday’s Old Dominion at Providence game. That Round 3 game will start at 7 p.m. ET Thursday.
In other Round 2 games, Kansas fought off a late 3-pointer by Creighton and went on to defeat the Bluejays 71-68 at Allen Fieldhouse in Lawrence, Kan. Kansas (17-15) will travel to play Illinois State at 8:05 p.m. ET on Thursday. Creighton ends its season 21-11.
Miami defeated Florida (15-17) 77-64 in a battle of Florida teams to advance to the third round. Miami (19-13) will host North Carolina A&T at 7 p.m. ET Thursday.
Michigan (19-13) used a strong second-half surge to overtake Toledo (25-9) in a 72-57 victory. The Wolverines will play the winner of St. Bonaventure-Northwestern in Round 3 at a location and date to be announced following that game Monday.
North Carolina A&T continued its Cinderella run in the WNIT with a 79-70 victory over host Charlotte. NC A&T (23-10), the regular-season champ in the Mid-Eastern Conference, beat Wake Forest in Round 1. NC A&T next travels to Miami to play at 7 p.m. ET Thursday.
Missouri State built on a 3-point lead at halftime to defeat visiting Samford 75-54. Missouri State (22-10) will host Monday’s Marquette-Illinois winner at 8:05 p.m. ET Thursday.
VCU did all it needed to do in the first half Sunday, as it earned an 84-65 victory over Hofstra. VCU (22-12) led 50-22 at halftime over Hofstra, which finished its season at 20-14.
The final game of the day featured a Round 1 matchup with Utah at Saint Mary’s (CA). Utah overcame a one-point halftime deficit to win 66-53. The Utes will play at Cal at 10 p.m. ET Tuesday, March 23.
