Wednesday, March 19, 2008 – Iona, Villanova, and Middle Tennessee won their opening games in the 2008 Postseason WNIT.
Iona defeated Quinnipiac 71-59, Villanova edged American 53-52, and Middle Tennessee downed Western Carolina 104-69.
Iona, playing in its second straight WNIT, won its opening game for the second straight year. Iona, second in the Metro Atlantic, improved to 20-13. Quinnipiac, the regular-season champion of the Northeast Conference, ended its season at 25-6.
Iona will play at St. John's at 7 p.m. ET Monday.
Villanova won a back-and-forth game against American, thanks to a last-second shot. Villanova set an NCAA season record with 306 3-pointers, one more than the 2005 record held by Missouri State's team.
Villanova (16-15) moves on to play at Wisconsin at 7 p.m. CT Saturday. American finishes at 18-14.
Middle Tennessee (22-11) went over the century scoring mark to defeat visiting Western Carolina (25-9). They advance to play at Kentucky at 7 p.m. ET Friday.
