November 19, 2011 – McNeese State held off a late rally by UAB in regulation Saturday and outscored the Blazers in overtime to capture a 61-56 win and go 2-1 in the Preseason Women’s National Invitation Tournament.
McNeese, which last year tied the NCAA record for the best turnaround in wins and advanced to the NCAA Tournament, got 13 points apiece from Ashlyn Baggett and Caitlyn Baggett. The Cowgirls shot out to a 36-18 lead at halftime before UAB clawed back to force overtime, where McNeese’s Martika Hull scored six of her eight points to give her team the victory.
In other consolation round games Saturday, Manhattan handled ETSU 86-53 in a game at McNeese State. In the two games at Akron, Drexel defeated Akron 67-60 in the winner’s matchup and Howard edged Detroit 60-58 in the earlier game there.
Saturday’s games were the final ones for everyone in the tournament except for No. 1 Baylor and No. 2 Notre Dame, who play each other Sunday in the Championship Game. The matchup begins at 2 p.m. ET/1 p.m. CT and will be televised live on CBS Sports Network from Waco, Texas.
