November 20, 2011 – MVP Brittney Griner scored 32 points Sunday to lead Baylor’s basketball team to a 94-81 victory and the title of the Preseason Women’s National Invitation Tournament.
Griner gave Baylor an inside presence that Notre Dame could not overcome, although the Fighting Irish climbed back from a 47-36 halftime deficit to pull within one point at 56-55 in the second half. But Baylor answered with four different players scoring in a 10-1 run for some breathing room.
Griner set a Preseason WNIT record with 22 blocks in the four-game tournament, breaking the record held by former Baylor Bear Danielle Wilson. In addition to scoring 32 points Sunday, Griner pulled down 14 rebounds and had five blocks. Teammates Odyssey Sims (25 points) and Destiny Williams (15 points) also scored in double figures.
Notre Dame’s Natalie Novosel led the Irish with 28 points. Skylar Diggins (27 points) and Kayla McBride (11 points) also were in double figures for Notre Dame, which was the national runner-up last season.
Joining Griner on the All-Tournament Team were Sims (Baylor), Diggins (Notre Dame), Novosel (Notre Dame), Ruthanne Doherty of Hartford, and Rebekah Gardner of UCLA. The All-Tournament Team was comprised of players from teams that advanced to the semifinals or better of the Preseason WNIT.
