November 22, 2009 – Ohio State’s offensive scoring machine continued its ways Sunday in the title game of the Preseason Women’s National Invitation Tournament. The Buckeyes, ranked No. 3 in the country, defeated Oklahoma State 93-72 to capture the championship.
Ohio State averaged 91.8 points per game throughout the WNIT, with wins over Eastern Illinois (91-68), Bowling Green (91-72), and West Virginia (92-69) coming before Sunday’s finale. The Buckeyes set a new Preseason WNIT record for points in the tournament, with their 367 points eclipsing the former mark of 347 set in 2001 by Connecticut.
Andrea Riley of Oklahoma State led all scorers with 27 points.
Jantel Lavender and Samantha Prahalis were named co-MVPs of the WNIT for host Ohio State. Lavender averaged 23.0 points per game and 10.5 rebounds per game in four games, while Prahalis averaged 15 points, 5 rebounds, and 7.7 assists during the tournament.
Joining Lavender and Prahalis on the All-Tournament Team were Tegan Cunningham and Riley from Oklahoma State; Amy Beggin of New Mexico; and West Virginia’s Liz Repella.
