Grambling State vs. Memphis
Memphis, Tenn. - The Memphis Tigers improve to 22-19 all-time in season openers and advance to round two of the Preseason WNIT with a 92-42 defeat over Grambling State.
Memphis is now 5-0 all-time against Grambling State and will now travel to Middle Tennessee State to take on the Blue Raiders. The game is slated for Sun., Nov. 11 at 3 p.m. ET
Sam Houston State vs. Delaware
Newark, Del. - The Delaware Blue Hens cruised past Sam Houston State 63-31 and will now host Georgetown in the second round of the Preseason WNIT on Sunday, Nov. 11 at 2 p.m. ET.
Trumae Lucas led the Blue Hens with 15 points and teammate Jaquetta May added 13 coming off the bench. Sam Houston State’s Britni Martin led all scorers with 16 points followed by Angela Beadle with nine.
Delaware senior and 2011/2012 First-Team All-American Elena Delle Donne did not play and is listed as day-to-day while suffering from the symptoms of Lyme Disease.
The Blue Hens are now 22-20 in season openers and 31-11 in home openers. This was the first meeting between both schools and the first time Delaware has faced a Southland Conference opponent.
Morehead State vs. Illinois State
Bloomington, Ill. - Illinois State knocked off Morehead State 62-45 and advances to the second round of the Preseason WNIT. This was the first meeting between both teams.
The Redbirds will travel to Iowa to face the Hawkeyes on Sun. Nov. 11 at 3 p.m. ET.
Sacred Heart vs. Georgetown
Washington D.C. --Georgetown advances to round two of the Preseason WNIT with a 90-63 win over Sacred Heart.
Andrea White led the Hoyas with 24 points and pulled down seven boards and teammate Sugar Rodgers added 22 points, 10 rebounds, and five blocks. Sacred Heart’s Blair Koniszewski finished with 14 points.
The Hoyas move to 3-0 all-time against the Pioneers and will now wait for the winner of Sam Houston State and Delaware to see where and when they will be playing.
Liberty vs. Duquesne
Pittsburgh, PA --Duquesne moved past Liberty 63-46 to advance to the second round of the Preseason WNIT.
April Robinson led Duquesne with 14 points and seven assists while teammate Orsi Szecsi finished with nine points and seven rebounds. Liberty forward Devon Brown led all scorers with 19 points in 24 minutes of action.
The Dukes travel to Chapel Hill to take on the North Carolina Tar Heels on Sunday, Nov. 11 at 5 p.m. ET.
Northern Illinois vs. Iowa
Iowa City, Iowa – The Iowa Hawkeyes opened the first round of the Preseason WNIT with a 63-40 win over the Northern Illinois Huskies.
Morgan Johnson and Jaime Printy both led Iowa with 11 points and teammate Samantha Logic added 10. Northern Illinois senior Satavia Taylor led all scorers with 12 points and 11 rebounds.
The Hawkeyes are now a perfect 13-0 in season openers under Head Coach Lisa Bluder. The Huskies fall to 32-24 in opening games and are now 3-9 against Iowa under Head Coach Kathi Bennett.
Iowa will host the winner of Illinois State vs. Morehead State on Sunday at 3 p.m. ET.
Kennesaw State vs. Middle Tennessee State
Murfreesboro, Tenn. –Middle Tennessee State entered the 2012-2013 season as one of the most highly touted mid-major schools in the country. The Blue Raiders did not disappoint in their first game of the season cruising past Kennesaw State 87-45 in round one of the Preseason WNIT.
Ebony Rowe of MTSU led all scorers with 23 points on 8 of 14 from the field in 35 minutes of action. Teammate Kortni Jones finished with 21 points hitting five shots from behind the arc. Bria Young led Kennesaw State with 15 points and Chantel Kennedy chipped in 14.
The Blue Raiders move on to host the winner of Memphis vs. Grambling State on Sunday at 3 p.m. ET.
Davidson vs. North Carolina
Chapel Hill, N.C. -- The North Carolina Tar Heels held off the Davidson Wildcats 70-59 in a physical in-state battle during the opening round of the Preseason WNIT. The Tar Heels are now 4-0 all-time against Davidson and 3-0 versus the Wildcats in Chapel Hill.
UNC’s Xylina McDaniel led all scorers with 18 points and 12 rebounds. Laura Murray led Davidson with 16 points and teammate Hannah Early chipped in 11.
UNC used a 12-0 run late in the first half to take a lead at halftime 33-24. Davidson came out strong in the second half and tied the game at 40s. However, the tie didn’t last long as UNC went on an 11-0 run highlighted by a big three-pointer from Latifah Coleman to take a 51-40 lead. The Tar Heels never looked back and led by as many as 17 points.
The Tar Heels posted their 13th straight win in a season opener and are now 34-5 all-time in season openers, including a 23-4 mark under Head Coach Sylvia Hatchell.
