November 7, 2006 – Basketball time has arrived!
The Preseason Women’s National Invitation Tournament kicks off the college basketball season with games Thursday night. First-round games begin at Stanford, Purdue, North Carolina State and St. John’s, with other first-round games played Friday.
The 16-team, single-elimination tournament gets teams in the flow of the season quickly. The field features several teams ranked among the nation’s best, including Stanford, Purdue, Baylor, North Carolina State, St. John’s and Hartford.
Many of the teams are coming off of postseason appearances. Eight of the squads advanced to the NCAA Tournament last spring, and three others were chosen for the Postseason WNIT. Stanford advanced to the Elite Eight round of the NCAAs, and Purdue and Baylor, which won the national title in 2005, made it to the Sweet 16. Hartford, BYU, St. John’s, NC State and Dartmouth also earned NCAA berths. The three teams that were selected for the WNIT were Hofstra, Idaho State and Belmont.
Second-round games will be played on Nov. 12-13, semifinals on Nov. 15-16 and the championship is scheduled for Sunday, Nov. 19. All games are played on home campuses, which are determined after each round.
