Albuquerque, NM -- In the tightest game so far of the 2018 Preseason WNIT, Daisa Alexander converted a jumper and free throw with 16 seconds to go, and sophomore Unique Thompson dominated with 19 points and 19 rebounds as Auburn prevailed in The Pit and slipped by New Mexico.
The Tigers (3-0) will play at Iowa State on Tuesday in a Preseason WNIT semifinal; tipoff is set for 7:30 p.m. ET. New Mexico (1-1) will host Hartford in a consolation round game on Nov. 18, with tipoff at 4 pm. ET.
The game was a thriller throughout; Thompson scored four points in a 10-second span to push Auburn to a 74-71 lead with 1:40 to go. Jaisa Nunn host two free throws for New Mexico; Janiah McKay nailed a jumper for the Tigers, and freshman Jayla Everett sunk a 3-pointer to tie it up at 76-all with 41 seconds remaining.
Alexander hit her shot and was fouled; after a timeout, New Mexico got a look with a 3-pointer, but Everett's shot missed the mark.
For the Tigers, McKay had 19 points and six assists. Alexander had 14 points and three steals; Thompson was one rebound short of the Preseason WNIT single-game record.
The Lobos got 25 points from Everett, who nailed seven 3-pointers. Nunn added 16 points and three steals.
