WEST VIRGINIA 76, ST. JOHN’S 62
MORGANTOWN, WV – In the battle of former Big East foes, West Virginia (25-11) playing in front of a home crowd, pulled away from St. John’s (19-14) and secured its spot in the semifinals of the 2018 Postseason WNIT with the 76-62 win.
West Virginia will host the Hokies of Virginia Tech in the next round; tipoff is set for 7 p.m. ET on Wednesday, March 28.
After the initial 10 minutes, the two programs were tangled in a close fight with the Mountaineers leading by a single point, 18-17. An inspired effort in the second quarter led West Virginia to outscore St. John’s 20-11 and gave them a 10-point lead at the break.
Picking up where the Mountaineers left off, West Virginia rambled off a quick 9-3 run, giving themselves a bit of cushion to open of the second half. The Red Storm pushed back late in the fourth quarter but another WVU 7-0 scoring tirade put the game out of reach and West Virginia into the semifinals.
Teana Muldrow poured in a career-high 33 points, tying Cherise Beynon and Dionna White for most in a single-game during the 2018 WNIT. Katrina Pardee contributed 15 points, four rebounds and four assists while Naomi Davenport added 12 points and five rebounds.
With the victory, West Virginia remains undefeated facing St. John’s at the WVU Coliseum.
Akina Wellere offered up 23 points and six rebounds for the Red Storm. Teammates Maya Singleton and Andrayah Adams had 13 and 12 points, respectively.
