March 26, 2011 – Charlotte held off a late Virginia rally Saturday night to punch its first-ever ticket to the semifinals of the Postseason WNIT.
The 49ers defeated Virginia 79-74, defeating the Cavaliers for the first time in five meetings in the history of the two programs. Charlotte will play the winner of Sunday’s Syracuse-at-Toledo game in the semifinals at a date and location to be announced following Sunday’s game.
Saturday’s game was the final one for Virginia head coach Debbie Ryan, who two weeks ago announced she was stepping down at the end of the season. Ryan, a member of the Women’s Basketball Hall of Fame, was the head coach at Virginia for 34 of the program’s 38 years.
In Virginia’s final game of the season, the Cavaliers (19-16) got a career-high 25 points from sophomore guard China Crosby. For Charlotte, Shannon McCallum scored 24 points and was 10 of 11 from the free-throw line, including several in the final minute to secure the win for the 49ers.
