MIAMI 75, HARTFORD 62
Miami, FL -- Miami outscored Hartford in the paint by 36 points, and post players Emese Hoff (21 points) and Beatrice Mompremier (19 points) thrived Sunday in Round 2 of the 2018 Preseason WNIT.
Miami (3-0) will play Marquette or Northern Iowa in the semifinals on Thursday. Hartford (1-2) will play in a consolation round game later this week.
The Hurricanes shot 53 percent from the field and had a 43-24 lead in rebounds. Mompremier had 13 rebounds, and Endia Banks closed with 11 points and seven rebounds.
Hartford stayed in range in the first half and took a 22-21 lead with 4:11 before halftime on a 3-pointer by Kelly Douglass, one of four long-range shots by the Hawks to that point. Another long shot from Douglass had Hartford within 43-41 with 5:25 left in the third quarter, but the Hurricanes answered with an 11-2 run and closed the frame with a 56-46 lead.
The Hawks got 24 points from Sierra DaCosta, two off her career high. Lindsey Abed added 18 points.
MARQUETTE 102, NORTHERN IOWA 61
Milwaukee, WI -- Marquette had another standout defensive effort, forcing 25 turnovers and running past Northern Iowa in Round 2 of the 2018 Postseason WNIT.
The Golden Eagles (3-0) will play at Miami in one semifinal, with tipoff set for 7 p.m. ET on Thursday, Nov. 15. The Panthers (1-1) will play in a consolation round game later this week.
Marquette was in charge throughout, taking a 20-point lead at halftime and extending its lead by another 14 points in the third quarter. It was the second straight game the Golden Eagles topped 100 points and had six players reach double figures in scoring. Allazia Blockton finished with 22 points, and Erika Davenport closed with 18 points as her squad shot better than 56 percent from the field.
Northern Iowa hit 15 3-pointers, just one off the tournament record. Of the Panthers' 66 shots, 48 came from long range. Ellie Howell had 15 points; Bre Gunnels and Abby Gerrits each had 12 points for UNI.
IOWA STATE 70, NORTHERN ILLINOIS 60
Ames, IA -- Iowa State took a nine-point lead after the first quarter and maintained a comfortable lead the rest of the way, topping Northern Illinois in Round 2 of the 2018 Preseason WNIT.
The Cyclones (2-0) will play New Mexico or Auburn in one semifinal; the Huskies (1-1) will play in the consolation round later this week.
Northern Illinois did get back within eight points with 5:08 left in the fourth quarter on a layup from Mikayla Voigt, but ISU got back in control via five quick points from Madison Wise. Bridget Carleton scored 21 points for Iowa State to go with 13 rebounds and six assists. Kristin Scott had 15 points, and Wise finished with 12 points and six rebounds.
Voigt scored 12 points for the Huskies; Courtney Woods, Errin Hodges and Gabby Nikitinaite each scored 10 points.
AUBURN 79, NEW MEXICO 76
Albuquerque, NM -- In the tightest game so far of the 2018 Preseason WNIT, Daisa Alexander converted a jumper and free throw with 16 seconds to go, and sophomore Unique Thompson dominated with 19 points and 19 rebounds as Auburn prevailed in The Pit and slipped by New Mexico.
The Tigers (3-0) will play at Iowa State on Tuesday in a Preseason WNIT semifinal; tipoff is set for 7:30 p.m. ET. New Mexico (1-1) will host Hartford in a consolation round game on Nov. 18, with tipoff at 4 pm. ET.
The game was a thriller throughout; Thompson scored four points in a 10-second span to push Auburn to a 74-71 lead with 1:40 to go. Jaisa Nunn host two free throws for New Mexico; Janiah McKay nailed a jumper for the Tigers, and freshman Jayla Everett sunk a 3-pointer to tie it up at 76-all with 41 seconds remaining.
Alexander hit her shot and was fouled; after a timeout, New Mexico got a look with a 3-pointer, but Everett's shot missed the mark.
For the Tigers, McKay had 19 points and six assists. Alexander had 14 points and three steals; Thompson was one rebound short of the Preseason WNIT single-game record.
The Lobos got 25 points from Everett, who nailed seven 3-pointers. Nunn added 16 points and three steals.
