MIAMI 81, STEPHEN F. AUSTIN 60
Miami, FL – No. 25 Miami displayed a sharp shooting eye to build a big lead against Stephen F. Austin and blended that with sturdy defense to move into Round 2 of the 2018 Preseason WNIT.
The Hurricanes (2-0) will face Hartford on Sunday; the Ladyjacks (0-1) move into the consolation round.
Miami shot 56 percent overall and converted 12 3-pointers, all coming in the first three quarters. Sophomore guard Mykea Gray had 25 points, two off her career high, and junior guard Laura Cornelius closed with nine points and eight assists. Baylor transfer Beatrice Mompremier added 14 points in her first game with the Hurricanes.
Stephen F. Austin was paced by Chanell Hayes, who had 19 points. Heaven Hamling closed with 15 points.
The Ladyjacks tied the game early in the second quarter on a 3-pointer by Brioenne Burns to make it 22-all, but the Hurricanes quickly responded and pulled ahead by a 43-30 margin at halftime. Miami was 9-of-16 from 3-point range in the half and forced 11 turnovers in that span.
Back-to-back 3-pointers by Gray late in the third quarter built the Miami advantage to 60-37.
IOWA STATE 95, NIAGARA 35
Ames, IA – Iowa State burst its way to a 23-point lead after one quarter and kept Niagara at a comfortable distance the rest of the way in Round 1 of the 2018 Preseason WNIT.
The Cyclones (1-0) will host Northern Illinois in Round 2; that game is set for Sunday at 3 p.m. ET. The Purple Eagles (0-2) move into the consolation round.
Freshman guard Ashley Joens launched her highly anticipated ISU career with 16 points. All Big-12 senior Bridget Carleton closed with 14 points, 15 rebounds and seven assists, and Inez Nezerwa added 14 points. Iowa State shot 54 percent from the field (all 12 players in uniform scored) and had a 46-31 edge in rebounding.
Iowa State claimed a 27-4 lead after the first 10 minutes, which was capped by a 3-pointer from Adriana Camber at the buzzer. The Cyclones then enjoyed an 11-1 run over the final 5:37 of the second quarter to take a 49-12 halftime lead.
Jai Moore had 12 points for Niagara, and Maggie McIntyre added 11 points.
AUBURN 80, NICHOLLS STATE 59
Auburn, AL – Auburn showed a steady hand offensively to build a big lead against Nicholls State through three quarters, and the Tigers were never threatened the rest of the way in their Round 1 victory in the 2018 Preseason WNIT.
Auburn (2-0) will face New Mexico in Round 2; the Colonels (0-2) will play in the consolation round.
The Tigers had a 21-point lead (64-43) after 30 minutes on 53 percent shooting. While the 3-pointers were not falling on the night (4-of-18 overall), Auburn did exert its will underneath with a 42-28 edge in rebounding.
Daisa Alexander closed with 20 points for Auburn; Emari Jones had 15 points and eight rebounds, while Janiah McKay added 14 points and seven assists. The Tigers’ defense forced 24 turnovers.
For Nicholls State, Cassidy Barrios had 20 points and 11 rebounds. Destiny Collins added 13 points and three steals.
HARTFORD 80, MORGAN STATE 59
Hartford, CT – Hartford forced 33 turnovers on the night and led for all but 25 seconds against Morgan State to move out of Round 1 in the 2018 Preseason WNIT.
The Hawks (1-1) will play at Miami in Round 2; tipoff is set for 1 p.m. ET on Sunday. The Lady Bears (1-2) will play in the consolation round.
Ella Awobajo had 18 points and 10 rebounds for Hartford, going 9-for-9 from the free-throw line. Lindsey Abed filled the scoresheet with an impressive night featuring seven points, six assists and seven steals. The Hawks were a chilly 6-for-25 from the 3-point line.
Morgan State was led by Adre’onia Coleman, who had 19 points and seven rebounds. Naomi Bolasingh closed with 13 points and Jihayah Chavis also had 11 points. The Lady Bears were 16-of-22 from the free-throw line.
MARQUETTE 100, MONTANA STATE 52
Milwaukee, WI – A scorching night of shooting and typically strong defense was the recipe for No. 19 Marquette, which had a 31-point lead by halftime in easing past Montana State in the first round of the 2018 Preseason WNIT.
The Golden Eagles (2-0) will face Northern Iowa in Round 2; the Bobcats (1-1) will play in the consolation round.
Allazia Blockton, last year’s Big East player of the year, finished with 23 points in going 10-for-12 from the field. Amani Wilborn added 17 points, six rebounds, five assists and three steals. Marquette had six players reach double figures in scoring; the team shot 56 percent from the field and forced 23 turnovers.
Oliana Squires had 14 points for Montana State; Claire Lundberg closed with 10 points. The Bobcats were just 7-of-34 from 3-point range.
NEW MEXICO 82, TEXAS STATE 51
Albuquerque, NM – New Mexico broke open a tight game at halftime by outscoring Texas State 33-12 in the third quarter, then handled the contest the rest of the way to advance out of Round 1 of the 2018 Preseason WNIT.
The Lobos (1-0) will host Auburn in Round 2, with tipoff set for 4 p.m. ET. The Bobcats (0-1) will play in the consolation round.
Also helping matters for New Mexico was a defense that forced 24 turnovers. Offensively, the tone was set by Aisia Robertson’s 17 points (along with eight rebounds), while Jaisa Nunn added 14 points and Jayla Everett had 11 points. Shaiquel McGruder reeled in 13 rebounds.
Texas State got 18 points from Toshua Leavitt, but she was the only player to have more than six points.
NORTHERN IOWA 79, DELAWARE 67
Cedar Falls, IA – Karli Rucker had a career-high 25 points as Northern Iowa took a double-digit halftime lead over Delaware and held on for a Round 1 victory in the Preseason WNIT.
The Panthers (1-0) will play at Marquette in Round 2 on Sunday, with tip set for 2 p.m. ET. The Blue Hens (0-1) move to the consolation round.
Megan Maahs added 17 points, 10 rebounds and two blocked shots for Northern Iowa, and Ellie Howell closed with 15 points and eight rebounds. Rucker also had six assists; the Panthers were 26-of-30 from the free-throw line.
Jasmine Dickey had 23 points and 12 rebound for Delaware. Abby Gonzales added 12 points, and Samone DeFreese scored 11 points to go with six rebounds.
