Record crowd of 18,018 watches Ohio State nip New Mexico in championship

March 28, 2001; Albuquerque, N.M. - The Ohio State women's basketball team edged New Mexico 62-61 to claim the 2001 Postseason WNIT, its first postseason title in program history.

Ohio State overcame the Lobos on their home court before a sellout crowd of 18,018 at The Pit. It is the biggest crowd in WNIT history.

The championship title marked the culmination of one of the most inspiring seasons of competition in recent years for the Buckeyes. Decimated by injuries that at one time reduced their roster from 13 to six, the Buckeyes regrouped to claim the WNIT crown.

The run closed with the team recording the most successful record in eight seasons at 22-11 (6-10 Big Ten). Guard Jamie Lewis was named MVP of the Postseason WNIT. Teammate Courtney Coleman was named to the all-tournament team, as well as Jordan Adams and Chelsea Grear of New Mexico; Janka Gabrielova of Hawaii; and Wisconsin's Shanna Price.

Ohio State's road to the WNIT Championship included victories over Cincinnati, DePaul, Western Kentucky, and James Madison.

New Mexico overcame Hawaii, Alabama-Birmingham, Arizona, and Houston to get to the title game.
