No. 5 Louisville starts season strong
The nation’s fifth-ranked Louisville Cardinals out-gunned Loyola University Chicago 101-54 in their opening game of the Preseason WNIT on Saturday night.
Louisville advances to Round 2 and will host Quinnipiac at 7 p.m. ET Monday, Nov. 11. Loyola moves to the consolation round and will play games Nov. 15-16, with details to be announced Sunday afternoon.
Louisville, which finished as NCAA Tournament Runner-ups a year ago, had six players score in double figures while making 46.8 percent of its team field goals. Bria Smith led the way with 16 points and 8 rebounds. Preseason Wooden Top 30 pick Shoni Schimmel had 11 points and 6 assists in 23 minutes of action.
Loyola is coming off of its winningest season in 25 years. Tonight’s game was the career coaching opener for the legendary Sheryl Swoopes, who is leading Loyola in the transition from the Horizon League to the Missouri Valley Conference this season. The Ramblers saw sophomore Taylor Johnson, last year’s Horizon League Newcomer of the Year, score 18 points and add 3 assists.
