PHILADELPHIA, PA – Redshirt freshman Bre Cavanaugh hits a series of clutch shots and free throws in the fourth quarter, ending up with 32 points and eight rebounds and playing all 40 minutes as Fordham escaped Drexel in Round 2 of the 2018 Postseason WNIT.
Cavanaugh hit a 3-pointer to push Fordham up, 58-54, with 1:29 remaining. Aubree Brown hit a layup to make it 58-56, and the margin stayed close as Brown hit two free throws with 12 seconds left to pull Drexel to a 61-60 margin.
Drexel had to foul, and Cavanaugh converted two free throws for the final margin. Drexel missed two 3-pointers in the final seconds.
Mary Goulding had 13 points for Fordham, which will play at Virginia Tech on Thursday, March 22 in Round 3. Tipoff is 7 p.m. ET. For Drexel, Bailey Greenberg had 20 points and six rebounds, and Brown closed with 14 points and seven assists.
Both teams struggled out of the starting gate, as Drexel (26-8) held an 8-6 lead after the first quarter. Fordham (23-9) used a 9-0 run in the third quarter to take a 39-36 lead, and Cavanaugh’s layup at the buzzer put the Rams up, 43-38, heading into the final quarter.
