BLACKSBURG, VA – Virginia Tech (20-13) trailed early but clamped down defensively in the second quarter to build an 18-point halftime lead, then handled business the rest of the way to top George Mason and advance out of Round 2 at the 2018 Postseason WNIT.
The Hokies saw George Mason close within 55-47 early in the fourth quarter; Regan Magarity hit back-to-back 3-pointers to help rebuild the advantage, and consecutive hoops from Taylor Emery pushed the Hokies up, 65-52 with 5:26 remaining. The victory puts VT in line to play either Fordham or Drexel in Round 3; theme will tip off at 7 p.m. ET March 22.
Virginia Tech, which forced 17 turnovers, was paced by Emery, who had 23 points. Magarity closed with 17 points and seven rebounds, Alexis Jean added 16 points and nine rebounds, and Rachel Camp added 10 points and four assists.
George Mason (24-10) was led by Natalie Butler, who closed with 26 points and 20 rebounds. She set the Patriots’ school record for single-single scoring, and she tied an NCAA mark with her 33rd double-double and her 33rd consecutive double-double.
