NEW YORK CITY – In a tight defensive battle that saw both teams labor to reach the 30-point mark in three quarters, St. John’s got a key steal in the final minute by Maya Singleton and survived shooting just 36 percent from the field to ease past Penn in Round 2 of the 2018 Postseason WNIT
Qadashah Hoppie, who hit a key jumper to help the Red Storm (18-14) preserve the lead in the final minutes, had 12 points; Akina Wellere added 10 points, and Singleton had seven points and nine rebounds. St. John’s will host Duquesne in Round 3; tipoff is set for 7 p.m. ET on Thursday, March 22.
Penn (22-9) trailed by six points after the first quarter but held the Red Storm to just eight points in the next frame to get back in range. The Quakers were just 4-of-10 from the free-throw line, and the Red Storm had an edge there, going 13-of-16.
Lauren Whitlatch had 15 points for Penn, as did Eleah Parker, who also reeled in 11 rebounds. Michelle Nwokedi added 10 points and eight rebounds.
