MICHIGAN 74, LIBERTY 50
Ann Arbor, MI – Using the same formula that guided the team to the Postseason WNIT title last season, Michigan rumbled past Liberty on Sunday to advance to Round 3 of the 2017 Preseason WNIT.
The Wolverines (2-0) will play either Louisville or Toledo in the semifinals on Thursday, Nov. 16; the Cardinals and the Rockets play on Tuesday.
Katelynn Flaherty (20 points, five assists, 10-of-10 from the free-throw line) and Hallie Thome (16 points), both seniors who keyed the Wolverines all last season, helped Michigan build an early advantage and take a 46-26 lead into halftime. Nicole Munger hit three 3-pointers and closed with 13 points, and Hailey Brown added 10 points.
Michigan shot 49 percent from the field, forced 21 turnovers and closed with a 21-6 advantage in made free throws.
Liberty (1-1) will learn its consolation round opponent at the conclusion of Round 2 on Tuesday. The Flames were paced by Keyen Green, who had 12 points and eight rebounds.
TEXAS A&M 83, LOUISIANA 62
College Station, TX – Texas A&M outscored Louisiana by 15 points in the third quarter to build a comfortable lead and eventually cruise to the victory Sunday, putting the Aggies into the semifinals of the Preseason WNIT.
Texas A&M will face Oregon or Drake in the semifinals on Thursday, Nov. 16; the Ducks and the Bulldogs play later Sunday.
Chennedy Carter scored 18 points, and Anriel Howard had 17 points and 14 rebounds for Texas A&M (2-0). Danni Williams added 15 points with Khaalia Hillsman coming in with 11 points and 11 rebounds. The Aggies had a 46-28 edge in rebounds and shot 48 percent from the field.
Louisiana (1-1) will learn its consolation round opponent after Round 2 is completed on Tuesday. The Ragin’ Cajuns were paced Sunday by Skyler Goodwin’s 13 points, with Kendra Howard (12 points) and Nekia Jones (10 points) also hitting double figures.
OREGON 110, DRAKE 77
Eugene, OR – Oregon’s potent offense took charge early against Drake, and after shooting 55 percent (16-of-29) from 3-point range rolled past the Bulldogs on Sunday and into the 2017 Preseason WNIT semifinals.
The Ducks (2-0) will play at Texas A&M on Thursday, Nov. 16 with tipoff set for 8 p.m. ET.
Sabrina Ionescu posted a triple-double and finished the contest with 29 points, 11 assists and 10 rebounds as Oregon tied the event’s single-game record for most 3-pointers made (Washington, 2016). Ionescu hit six of her eight 3-pointers. Satou Sabally had 20 points; Lexi Bando closed with 16 points, and Maite Cazorla added 12 points and 11 assists.
Drake (1-1) will find out its consolation round assignment after Tuesday’s other Round 2 game between Louisville and Toledo. The Bulldogs got 14 points from Sara Rhine; Katie Van Scyoc added 11 points.
