MIAMI 63, MARQUETTE 55
Miami, FL -- Miami's 16-point second half lead shrunk to one point thanks to a furious Marquette rally, but the No. 25 Hurricanes scored four late points to slip by the 19th-ranked Golden Eagles and advance to the Preseason WNIT championship game.
The Hurricanes (4-0) will take on host Iowa State in the title matchup, set for 4:30 p.m. ET Sunday, Nov. 18 and televised on CBS Sports Network.
Career-high totals of 24 points and 21 rebounds (the latter number set a single-game record for the Preseason WNIT) from Baylor transfer Beatrice Mompremier helped preserve Miami's tournament run as the Hurricanes had 19 turnovers. After Marquette closed to 56-55, both teams went on a long scoring drought that was broken on a putback from Mompremier, which made it 58-55 with 53 seconds to go.
Miami got some insurance at :41, when Laura Cornelius stole the ball and sank two free throws to make it 60-55.
The Hurricanes also got 10 points and 10 rebounds from Emese Hof, and Cornelius closed with 10 points. Miami had a 56-41 rebounding edge and held Marquette (3-1) to 29 percent shooting from the field.
The Golden Eagles were paced by Erika Davenport's 15 points and seven rebounds. Danielle King had 10 points and four steals. Baskets by Amani Wilborn and Allazia Blockton pulled Marquette to a 56-55 deficit, but those were the final points for the visitors the rest of the way.
